Cochise Stronghold

Cochise StrongholdRock Formations at Cochise StrongholdCochise Stronghold is a section of the Coronado National Forest. It is also a campground in that forest. But, the main point is that is a very rocky area of southeastern Arizona where travel is only possible by foot. This is the place where Cochise, a Chiricahua Indian leader, went to escape the U.S. military after he took a few things from some of the white settlers. Think rocks. Really big rocks in formations hundreds of feet high. Basically, it was a place where it was so difficult to traverse that the military simply could not dislodge him from the location. The history of white settlement in the United States is interesting. It took centuries to accomplish. It’s still going on. The U.S. Army never defeated Cochise. They could minimize his impact, but they could never defeat him. It’s an interesting story, one I’d like to know more about.
