Ferry to Kota Kinabalu

This is the ferry to Kota Kinabalu. It cost me about $11 to take a 3 hour ferry ride from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan, an island close to Brunei. Then, I caught a fast boat to Brunei – another hour and $3. Eventually I got to Brunei and on the return I took the same boats back in the opposite direction.

Kiddee Wipes – Brunei

These are kiddee wipes which can be purchased at almost all of the supermarkets in Brunei. The reason why I show a picture of them is that Brunei is a country where there is often a problem in finding poilet paper in the toilets. So, I carry kiddee wipes everywhere I go whenever I’m out and about outside of the U.S. They come in really handy for cleaning up spills and wiping my nose whenever I have a cold. They also come in handy for wiping other things. Kiddee wipes have really cool pictures on them and make me feel better about having to carry them.

Fueling – Brunei

If you look closely, you’ll see that the feul price in Brunei is soemewhere around $1 gallon. This is because the country produces a lot of petroleum for the world market and subsidizes the cost of fuel for local residents, much like all of the other petrolem procducing nations of the world, including ours

Dinner – Brunei

Let’s face it. I was starting to get the hang of eating in Asia. I was actually starting to recognize some of the items on the menu and adapting wll to the small portion sizes. I was even getting along nicely without a knife. All-in-all it wasns’t a gourmet experience, but I wan’t starving, either.

Nice Mosque – Brunei

Brunei didn’t have many big buildings. In the capital of Bandar San Begawan there was a mall and some athletic fields and a nice downtown section on the river. There were no bars. Alcohol isn’t sold in the country. It was an interesting place. I think a night on the town consisted of dinner and a movie. By 8 Pm there were few businesses open. I thought about sneaking down to the Sheraton to see if I could sneak a drink…

Water Village – Brunei

Water Village – Brunei

This is the famous Water Village of Brunei. Or, at least part of it. The locals all tell me that their ancestors were water swellers and that the water village is simply an extension of their past. Sounds alittle hypothetical to me. What’s not hypothetical is that somewhere around 30,000 people are supposed to live there relatively rent-free, paying only utiltiies. Granted, these aren’t luxury villas, but they are unique. I guess, if you had the money, you could fix it up any way you wanted.
