Choeung Ek Memorial

Choeung Ek Memorial

Choeung Ek Memorial

It’s a memorial at the Killing Fields outside of Phnom Penh. It’s a nice memorial but inside of the building in the picture are the skeletal remains of about 9,000 human beings who were buried in mass graves on this site. There are still thousands of bodies which are still buried on the site. This was supposed to be the largest of the mass grave sites in Cambodia for people who were tortured and then executed. It’s my understanding that there may be larger gravesites in Cambodia but the people entombed there died of disease and starvation.

Phnom Penh Apts

Phnom Penh Apts

Phnom Penh Apts

These are your basic apartment in Phnom Penh. There are businesses on the first floor and apartments on floors 2-7. I would imagine the apartments are pretty small. These apartment appeared to be some of the relatively nice ones. I saw some in neighborhoods where I wouldn’t want to be living.

Sidewalk Parking

Sidewalk Parking

Sidewalk Parking

Where do you think people park their cars in Phnom Penh? That’s right, they park them on the sidewalk. So where do the pedestrians walk when they want to walk somewhere? They walk in the streets, where else?

Optic Store

Optic Store

This is the optic store where I stopped to get my glasses adjusted. They did a great job, better than the one I usually get at home. They charged me nothing and the service was pretty quick. Next time I need my glasses adjusted I’m going to think of Phnom Penh optical. Inside, their ads say they have 66 locations scattered across the city.

Fuel Stop

Fuel Stop

It’s a fuel stop. See the bottles in the picture? They contain fuel. Pull your vehicle over to the fuel stop and someone comes out with a funnel and puts one of the liter bottles of fuel in the vehicle.

Electric Bike

Electric Bike

Electric Bike

I rented it because I had never ridden an electric bike. Never, in all my life. II thought it might be a new and interesting experience. It was. I now want an electric bike for my home. Will I get one? Ya’ never know. But, I have a feeling that I’m going to look into it when I get home. I could put it on the back of my big truck and take it down whenever I get somewhere that is worth a little exploration time. I did have a good time on the electric bike. Oh, and did I mention the cost to rent it at the Angkor Archeological Park was $2 a day?

Electric Bike Admirers

The electric bike had some admirers and not just these guys. I think these two were thinking about taking off with the bike, that’s why I took the keys out of it.

Fill ‘er Up

Fill 'er Up

Fill ‘er Up

Here we have a really handsome young fuel attendant filling up a tuk-tuk. My driver stopped for fuel and I caught the attendant filling up the tank. It seems that there are small stands along the side of the road and a kid with a bunch of liter bottles of fuel and a funnel acts as a gas station. A scooter pulls over, the kid puts in the funnel and pours in one of the liter bottles of fuel. The driver pays and off he goes. These little mini-stations with a kid, a funnel and around 10 liter bottles of fuel were all over the place but I never noticed them until I saw one in action.

Starvin’ Marvin

Starvin' Marvin

Starvin’ Marvin

The guy on the right I’ll call Starvin’ Marvin. I was sitting in a chair, minding my own business, eating lunch when these two came up and wanted to sell me some bracelets. I told them that I didn’t really need any and after a while I tried to ignore them. Finally, Marvin gives me this "I haven’t had anything to eat for days" routine and I invited them to sit down and have something to eat. After all, I was having fried rice and vegetables at a cost of $1 and I figured I’d buy them the same thing I was having and they could have something to eat. But when I started to order them something, Marvin says "No", he wanted something else, something that cost $2. I said okay and Marvin tries to order two plates from the menu and a couple of cokes and deserts, one for him and one for his little partner-in-crime. I veto the order which is now up to about $8 for the two of them. I figured if I could eat for $1, so could they. But no, Marvin gets all huffy about not getting what he wanted. The whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I was just trying to be nice to these kids and the older one is being a jerk. In the end, after eating the food he ordered, he came around and gave me a couple of smiles after his belly was full of meat. However, I learned a lesson from the experience.

Feeding Monkey

Feeding Monkey

Feeding Monkey

I’d say it was a good picture. She’s feeding the monkey a banana. She had been feeding the other one before. There were many, many monkeys running around the Angkor Archeological Park. They were cute. On several occasions I stopped to watch them do their monkey business. It must have been springtime in the monkey world for there were many, many really small monkeys following their parents around and playing with each other. Did I feed any of the monkeys? No.
