Malta Cathedral

Malta CathedralI attended Mass this morning at the Malta Cathedral. Technically it is the St. Johns Co-Cathedral and it is located in Valletta, Malta. It was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. It’s the first time I have ever been in a co-cathedral to my recollection. Actually, I never knew there was such a thing. Continue reading

Seville Cathedral on Easter

Seville Cathedral on EasterIt is the Cathedral of Seville. It is one of my favorite cathedrals in the whole world. I got to vist it on Easter Sunday. How great was that? It was incredible. More than any other reason was that there were very few people there. It’s said that Seville gets a million people who come to see some part of Holy Week or Semana Santa. Why there were not more people at the cathedral early in the morning is anyone’s guess, I’m just glad I got to spend some time in such a magnificent structure without thousands of people around who I would have chosen not to have waded through. Sometimes, we lucky.

Cathedral in Barcelona Spain

Barcelona CathedralThis is a picture of the Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain. This is not the largest religious structure in Barcelona. That goes to the Sagrada Familia which is actually the top tourist attraction in Barcelona. I went to the “church” to visit. The term church is in quotes because I couldn’t seem to get anyone to tell me the times for mass. I could get lots of people to take my $30 to get in to see the inside of the main area of the church, but that is only used for services “on special occasions” I was told. When I asked if Easter was considered a special occasion I was told that it wasn’t. I’m not sure what special occasions Continue reading

Lima Peru Plaza de Armas

Lima Peru Plaza de Armas

Lima Peru Plaza de Armas

The main square of Lima is known as the Plaza de Armas. It’s in the center of the old town. It’s where all the action starts for people who want to understand the history of Lima. Around the Plaza exist a grid of crowded streets, many of them pedestrian, that were laid out in the days of Francisco Pizarro. Included on those streets are many of the main tourist attractions of Lima. On the square is the Cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno, residence of Peru’s president. The Plaza de Armas was the center the settlement founded by Pizarro in 1535. It was also the seat of government of the continent-wide empire ruled by the Spanish. Unfortunately, due to earthquakes, none of the original buildings survived. The only remaining feature is a fountain erected in 1650.

Manila Cathedral

Manila Cathedral

Manila Cathedral

The Manila Cathedral is located within Intramuros. The cathedral is quite large. This picture doesn’t capture the full extent of the size of the building. Unfortunately, I couldn’t capture the full size of the cathedral due to the fact that the building is surrounded by other buildings that are quite close to the cathedral. What can I say about the cathedral? It’s a good place to pray.
