Welcome
To My Blog

About Me: My grandparents were born in the Indian Territory / Oklahoma. My parents were born in Oklahoma, as was I, my wife, my children and my grandchildren. I was an irresponsbile teenager (it was the 60's, what can I say?) but managed to mature a little. I attend the University of Oklahoma and got a BA in History and went to work for a Fortune 500 company where I was unhappy. Eventually, I went back to OU for my MBA and PhD in MIS (ABD). I became a contract programmer because I programmed much better than I published. I also became a VAR for a firm selling accounting software written in a computer language called dBase that was designed for the Intel 8088 processor. I stayed firmly seated at the grindstone and in the first years of the new millenium I decided I needed a change. I figured that if I was ever going to to do all those things I said that I wanted to do, I'd better get going. In 2005 I sold my house and business and went to truck driving school. I now drive a Big Rig - mine - and I try not to work more than 6 months a year. I make an effort to spend at least 3 months a year outside of the U.S. I'm married. My wife and I have 6 kids and 9 grandchildren. Maybe that's why I like to travel so much.

Postscript: In December, 2010 I hung up my Driver's cap for good. The road had taken its' toll. I was no longer willing to drive 180 days a year, regardless of the money and the ability to work when I wanted. I had seen America. I was tired of being gone from home for 9 months a year. I needed a rest. In 2011 I sold my truck and trailer and was unemployed for the year. However, I wasn't inactive. I traveled overseas to Asia and South America for several months. In the fall I enrolled in an online course to to become certified in Oracle, the world's preeminent database. I want to go back to work sometime in the near future as a software developer or administrator. Even though I programmed for 20+ years, my skills are dated. Fortunately, I have a little flexibility as to my future.

Benchmarking Airfares

Benchmarking Airfare Pages: 1 2 3 4
Airfare Deals - Fly.com

There is another option for finding airfare fia the calendar. The web site is Fly.com. The way to find deals there is to find their Cheap Roundtrip Fares box. You can get there by clicking on the image on the left. Once there you will usually see around 10 fare specials. Pick one that interests you. If none interest you, pick the closest major airport to your location. Once on the next page, the page showing the Low Fare Calendar, you can modify the url on the Low Fare Calendar page by putting the origin and destination airport codes in the URL. Look for "Destination=" in the URL. Note that not all airports will have the Low Fare Calendar option. This calendar is primarily used for major-market airfare deals.

Airfare Deals - Travelzoo

Travelzoo is a great place to find airfare deals. Once a week they release their Top 20 deals and it always has at least one really good airfare deal. The problem can be that the one deal may be leaving from a place that is thousands of miles from where you live or going to somwhere that doesn't interest you in the least. Then again, it may be the deal you've been searching for. One thing's for sure, it doesn't take long to cruise the Travelzoo Top 20 deals. They also have a "specials" section for airfare within North American as well as airfare to Europe and other International destinations. They must be doing something right, they say they have "Over 23 Million Subscribers Worldwide" to their newsletters. My advice - get there early. Better still, notice where they are getting their deals from and get to their sources earlier still.

Airfare Deals - Sherman's Travel title=

Sherman's Travel is aother good place to find airfare deals. Once a week they release their Top 25 deals and it always has at least one really good airfare deal. What can be said for Travelzoo can also be said for Sherman's as well. They are very similar, even to how to find airfare deals. Both sites are well worth a visit. Sherman's has a "specials" section for airfare within North American as well as airfare to Europe and other International destinations.

Airfare Deals - Lufthansa

Lufthansa can have some good deals. They fly out of many U.S. cities and fly to many locations throughout the world. They are known to have some really good fare sales. Finding good fares, however, can be a little time-consuming. You can spend hours searching for airfares two dates at a time. You should visit a web site that allows you to benchmark fares for a period of time, i.e., find the lowest fare over a given period of time. Remember, when you are looking for airfare deals, the best ones will be from major markets. Oklahoma City, unfortunately, is not on that list and, in all proability, neither is the city where you live. Fortunately, most of us live close enough to a major market to be able to find and take advantage of the offers sooner or later. Just remember that not all carriers fly out of all markets. You must be patient when looking for airfare deals.
