Namibia Africa Biltong

Namibia Africa Biltong

Namibia Africa Biltong

It’s called biltong. That’s what the Africans call it. Beef biltong is simply beef jerky. But, biltong isn’t simply jerky. That’s because they slice it as your order it. It hangs around in a butcher shop until you walk in and say you want some and that’s when it gets sliced. Is it better than jerky in the U.S.? I’m afraid so. Not because they have better beef. No way. We have much better beef in America. It’s because it’s fresher and because they do not dry the jerky out so much when the dry it. Plus they have "game" jerky which means that they make jerky from some of the game animals. They have types of jerky that we never hear of.

Namibia Africa Map

This is a map of Namibia that I photographed in a bakery where we had lunch. I liked Namibia. Actually, I liked all of Africa. Each country has its’ own charm and attractions which make it special. I found that Namibia was no different. Plus, I had the extra bonus of knowing that I would be able to be home in a matter of a couple of weeks. My long journey was about to come to an end soon. From the time that this picture was taken I would only have to sleep in a tent for another three or four days. I would be back to sleeping in a bed and taking hot showers that were available all day long. What a good feeling.

Namibia Africa Breakfast

Namibia Africa Breakfast

Yes, this was my whole breakfast. They called it a "truck breakfast" which meant that we ate it on the truck. The whole point was that we (or rather other people besides me) wanted to leave early because we had a long driving day and they did not want to spend a lot of time on breakfast so we all got a biscuit and a banana. Actually, for some people, myself included, we could have had two biscuits and two bananas. That’s because there was a surplus of biscuits and bananas due to the fact that not everyone took their allocation (they ate some of their personal snacks instead) and very few people took seconds. All I can say is that we usually have a better breakfast than this.

Etosha Park Namibia Waterhole

At the campground where we stayed in Etosha they had built a watering hole for the animals. At the watering hole they had a pavilion where people could sit and watch the animals come up and drink. I went after dark and while I was there I saw a rhino come up to the floodlight-lit watering hole. It was very interesting. I should have stayed longer. Some people slept there in their sleeping bags.

The campground at Etosha was great. The bathrooms were excellent, the pool was really good, the locations where we pitched tents was really nice, and the fire pit was good. The restaurant was a little on the pricey side. Fortunately, we ate all our meals off of the truck for the one day that we were there. The place was one of the nicest campgrounds in which we stayed. Unfortunately, they did not have any internet. I guess our location was a problem. We were located in the middle of 18,000 square kilometers of national park.

Etosha Namibia Zebras

We had good luck with the zebras. Actually, we had good luck with animals in general in Etosha National Park. Granted, it wasn’t as good as the Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti, but it was still a really good experience. There were lots of animals all over the park and we say a large number as the park is huge. But. we did not see a lot of predators such as lions, leopards or cheetahs like we did at some of the other parks. However, Etosha is much less expensive than the other parks.

Etosha Namibia Elephant

This is one of the pictures that I took of the many elephants we saw. Most of the time when we see elephants they aren’t as close as this one. Granted, I would have liked to have gotten a picture of the front end of the elephant and not the back, but most of the elephant pics that I have are of elephants that are farther away or they are obscured by brush.

We arrived at Etosha National Park in Namibia late in the morning. Etosha is huge and we had 24 hours inside the park. There is a daily entrance fee and we booked one 24-hour day in the park. This park is a great park to drive around and look for game. We were going to look for game in our big yellow truck. It was the first time that we took the truck we were camping in and took it on a game drive. Previously we left the big yellow truck parked and just headed off in the smaller commercial game drive trucks. Not this time. We put both curtains up and went looking for wildlife.

Namibia Africa Dusty Roads

Namibia Africa Dusty Roads

Namibia Africa Dusty Roads

This is the floorboard of the back of the truck one morning after we went down some of Africa’s finest roads. Notice the footprints. They are there because there was so much dirt in the truck that the whole rear of the truck was covered with dust. What’s worse, we were all probably breathing this stuff and there’s probably a nice coating of dust on our lungs. It gets dusty in the back of the truck all the time. This was just one of the worst cases I’d seen in my time on the truck.
