Kuala Lumpur

I’m pretty sure it’s official. I’m going to Asia in 2017. This is the Wikipedia picture of the skyline of Kuala Lumpur (KL). This city is usually my base city when I’m wandering in Asia, primarily because of the cheap air connections into and out of the city. A person can always get from one place to another by air, but they can’t always do it cheaply. There are lots of flights leaving KL for locations throughout Asia that are very inexpensive. Plus, I like this city. A lot of backpackers pass through the hostels and it’s a cheap place to reside while I rest up between sub-adventures.

Airport Charge Station

Every time I go to the Kuala Lumpur Airport I’m more taken by it. Actually, I feel the same way about the city. It’s no Singapore, but it’s working its’ way there quite steadily. At the airport I found a new friend, the charge station. That’s my netbook on the counter and my daypack on the thoughtfully well-placed ledge below the counter. There were plenty of outlets for me to use and the attendants would come by and clean-up after me if I dropped any trash or spilt my drink. I could also see a clock so I could keep track of time and I had ample warning of my flight’s departure through the public address system. Plus, they have free wi-fi, but only for two hours. Then you have to go to Starbucks to get online.

Airport Bus

Airport Bus

Airport Bus

It’s the shuttle bus between the airport in Kuala Lumpur and Sentral, the central transportation hub. It leaves every half-hour and costs either $2.70 or $3 depending on which company you use. The trip into town takes about an hour, depending on traffic. They run from about 4 AM until about midnight. Get to the airport after the last bus leaves? Not likely, but, if you do, sleeping at the KL airport is easy, but uncomfortable.

Mosque – Kuala Lumpur "Masjid Jamek"

Masjid Jamek is supposed to be the oldest mosque in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I can’t say that it is or it isn’t. I can say that it was supposed to have been built around the turn of the century in the early 1900′s. I can say that I like the way it sits, among the palm trees. It is very close to the center of the city. From here. I can easily walk to lots of other tourist attractions. Plus, there’s a subway station right beside the mosque.

Dinner 2 – Kuala Lumpur

Dinner 2 – Kuala Lumpur

It was my second dinner in KL. This time I went a little more into my Epicurean Mode. I had extra rice and added some veggies. The sauce on the rice was supposed to be less spicy than the sauce I had the first day. I’m learning that I need to dip my own sauce. Malaysians don’t really understand the English term "less spicy" as well as I would like. The juice is mango. The cost was a staggering $2.

I was impressed with the selection of donuts in Bukit Bintang. I figured I could have easily gotten into some kind of insulin shock by eating a couple of those little dream cakes.

Big M – Kuala Lumpur

Big M – Kuala Lumpur

It’s a 24 hour McDonald’s burger joint located in Bukit Bintang Kuala Lumpur’s major hot-spot area, which is also known as the Golden Triangle. It’s where KL goes to shop, or at least people with money go to shop, which in KL is quite a few. I noticed the big wi-fi sign immediately. The price of a Big Mac meal during lunch hours – about $2.50 or so.

Tourism – Kuala Lumpur

This is the main tourist center in Kuala Lumpur. Notice the Petronis Towers in the background. When I walked into the building my first thought was "Wow! I don’t think I can afford this place." Fortunately, all the information and brochures were free. It was a nice place.
