Ocracoke Island is part of the North Carolina Outer Banks. It has a population of less than 1,000 people and can only be reached by boat, plane or ferry. The majority of the island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. A single paved road runs from the south end of the island to the north end. Both ends have ferry docks. The island was a haven for pirates, Blackbeard in particular, and stories are circulated about undiscovered buried treasure still located on the island.
