Okinawa

Strategy: The primary reason to go is that it counts as another TCC country. Upon further examination I find that it has a very large aquarium.

Weather:  Temperature averages for lows/highs is 66/76 with less than 1/4th inch of rain in April. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in April.

Airfare:  Tigerair (and Peach) also flies from Taipei to Okinawa for around $65 USD. If I want to do Japan before Golden Week, the airfare to from Okinawa to Tokyo is around $30 – $100 USD in March but jumps to $200 USD in April. Seoul flights from Okinawa look to be $85 USD on Jeju Air. I checked Jetstar Japan and found there were no flights listed from Okinawa to Tokyo in April but there were flights listed in March for $85 USD. I’m thinking that it’s too early (09/2016) to book flights out in this area for April.

Transfers: There appears to be a monorail and the fare seems to be between $2-4 USD.

Hostels: HostelWorld. Hostelbookers. Lonely Planet. Not a lot of options (10-20) and prices ($12-24) looked good. Apparently, location matters here.

Attractions: TripAdvisor. VirtualTourist. Google. The list does not look terribly inviting.

Mayanmar

Strategy: Bagan Temples & Pagodas along with Shwedagon Stupa and Popa Taungkalat. Also, in Mandalay, Kuthodaw Pagoda,  Mandalay Palace and the Shwe Nandaw Monastery. Take trains around Myanmar. See seat61. The Wikipedia entry for Shwesandaw Pagoda (Bagan) has a great list of Major Buddhist sites in Myanmar. I have outlined a bunch of sites that were there and confirmed by TripAdvisor on their Bagan Things to Do page. It is recommended that I get an electric bike to tool around Bagan on since there are some 2,000 monuments or so in teh general area. Only one hostel but lots of hotels with dormitories. .

Great map of Bagan. More Bagan Maps. Yangon Maps. Mandalay Maps.

Free Yangon Walks – Guided Walking Tour of Yangon

Airfare: Spicejet can get me to Bangkok for $96.80 – 12:05 AM - 4:10 AM Flight: SG 83 from Madurai. Spicejet can get me to Bangkok for 90.40 USD from Kolkata. Note that BKK is “sleep-friendly” as far as Sleeping in Airports is concerned. Onetravel can get round-trip AirAsia tickets to Yangon for $147 USD. AirAsia can book it for $112 USD – much better. Onetravel can get me out of Bangkok to Taipei for $107 on Tigerair.

Transfers: See transit Bangkok.

Hostels: HostelWorld, Hostelbookers. There are over 300 hostels listed.

Attractions: TripAdvisor. Lonely Planet. Google. You’ve been there. Go see some places you have not been.

Kolkata India

Strategy: Kolkata is a base for going to Bangladesh, returning, and getting on to Thailand.

Weather: Temperature averages for lows/highs is 63/85 with less than 1/50th inch of rain in March. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in March.

Airfare: OneTravel can get me out of Madurai and on to Kolkata for $90. Spicejet can get me to Bangkok for 90.40 USD.

Transfers: Buses cost $2 USD for a 1 hour trip to town?

Hostels: Tons of cheap sleeps. Hostelworld. Lonely Planet.

Attractions: TripAdvisor, Wikipedia, Victoria Memorial (Images, Wikipedia), Indian Museum  (Images, Wikipedia), Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Shaheed Minar, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Marble Palace, more…

Dhaka Bangladesh

Strategy: Bangladesh is currently on my list because it represents another visa stamp. I know that’s sad, and I would like to change that in the future, but for this trip, it’s true.  Note that there is a $51 visa for entry into Bangladesh. The visa entry is not required for transition visitors.

Weather: Temperature averages for lows/highs is 67/91 with less than 1/25th inch of rain in March. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in March.

Airfare: Airfare into Kolkata costs $90. Airfare from Kolkata to Bangkok costs $115 in March on Indigo.

Transfers: No transfers involved. I will come in by train or not leave the airport if flying in.

Hostels: Try Lonely Planet Budget Accommodations.

Attractions: I’m still looking for what I think might be a good attraction to visit. I’m thinking a t-shirt from Dhaka University might be the best answer.

Madurai India

Strategy: India – map of Wonders to see. Wikitravel for Madurai. Meenakshi and Gopurams (gateway towers) is the reason why I’m going.

Weather: Temperature averages for lows/highs is 75/91 with less than 1/4 inch of rain in March. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in March.

Airfare: The flight out from Columbo to Madurai costs $92.20 USD and leaves CMB @ 2:00 PM. Note that OneTravel can get me out of Madurai and on to Kolkata for $90. Skyscanner can get me there for $83 and MakeMyTrip can get me there for $70. Note that I can get from Chennai to Bangkok for $96.20 on Spicejet (leaves Chennai at 10:00 PM arrives BKK at 3:00 AM.

Transfers: 500.00 INR = 7.46532 USD. Is 500 INR the going rate for airport transfers?

Hostels: Look at Lonely Planet or airbnb  for this one.

Attractions: Meenakshi and Gopurams (gateway towers) is the reason why I’m going.

Colombo Sri Lanka

Strategy: It seems that train transportation and hostels are really cheap making a trip to Kandy and Sigiriya worthwhile and practical.

Weather:  Temperature averages for lows/highs is 75/91 with less than 3 inches of rain in March. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in March.

Airfare: From Kuala Lumpur to Colombo is about $70 USD during March. Note that the plane arrives at 10:00 at night. Airport is “sleepable” but not good for arrival. Open 24 hours a day. Hostels are cheap. Malaysian Airlines has morning flights from $106. The flight out from Columbo to Madurai costs $92.20 USD and leaves CMB @ 2:00 PM. Note that OneTravel can get me out of Madurai and on to Kolkata for $90.

Transfers: 1,000.00 LKR = 6.86095 USD. Arrives late. Does the airport bus still work at 10:00 PM? Good article for getting around Sri Lanka is here. A good idea would be to email some of the hostels and ask if the bus runs all night.

Hostels: In Colombo – HostelWorld (26 hostels @ $7-16 USD) and HostelBookers (29 hostels @ $7-16 USD). In Dambulla, 1 hostel @$11 USD. None in Habarana. Lots (31) in Kandy.

AttractionsSigiriya (Wikipedia, Wikitravel) is the big one on Sri Lanka. I think I need to take a train from Colombo to Habarana and then go to Badulla where I can visit Sigiriya. Then, take the Badulla – Kandy – Colombo  back. Or vice versa. See seat61.com. Attractions from 1K Places are the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo and Esala Perahera (Kandy Festival).

Makassar Ambon Sorong

It’s a gamble if you ask me. I have a chance to rack up 3 Traveler’s Century Club “countries” in a week for somewhere between $100-150 per country. I think that’s a bargain both in terms of time and money. The problem is that I won’t get to see a lot. It’s basically just a “visa run” for the stamps. I don’t see that as a particular problem for me as these are places that I would be unlikely to visit if they did not offer me a chance at scoring a “country” with my visit. Do I feel particularly guilty about that? Not at all. Do I think it’s cheating to do a visa run and not hang around to get some significant sightseeing in? Not at all. So, what’s the problem?

The problem is uncertainty. I have to rely on a lot of flights to get from Bali to Makassar to Ambon to Sorong and then back. After quite a bit of searching I found that It made the most sense to go from Bali to Makassar and then to Ambon and spend the night. Ambon has twice the number of hotels compared to Sorong so the cost would be less and the quality of the hotel would be better. I would then get up the next day and fly to Sorong in the morning where I would catch the afternoon flight to Yogyakarta.

The details of such a trip would be DPS – > UPG (8:40 – 10:10 = $50 USD) and UPG – > AMQ (12:10 – 14:50 = $50 USD). A hotel in Ambon is about $30 USD. The next day the flights would be AMQ – SOQ (7:45 – 8:55 = $50 USD) and SOQ – JOG (10:45 – 18:05 = $150 USD). This puts me into Yogyakarta at a decent time without having a lot of stress as far as how early I have to make a flight (good luck getting to the airport on time) and as far as times in between flights (hoping for good weather). The total cost for flights and hotel looks to be about $330 and it only takes two days. This looks to be the best way for me to rack up these 3 “countries” - Sulawesi, Moluka and Papua (Irian Jaya) – with the least amount of effort in terms of time and money. While it certainly won’t be my most moment in terms of world travel, it will score some brownie points. Travel isn’t just about sitting in sidewalk cafes in idyllic locations or experiencing the Taj Mahal for a day or two. Sometimes it’s about figuring out difficult logistical issues. Sadly, sometimes I think I enjoy the latter just as much, if not more, than the former.

The challenge with taking the above option is that it seems the morning flights to Sorong from Ambon are not currently available during the period I expect to be needing them. If I were doing it tomorrow, no problem. But booking them today seems to be difficult. While there are several airlines that fly from Ambon to Sorong, it’s the timing of the flights that seem to be an issue. Route maps for GarudaLion Air and Sriwijaya Air show some of the possible ways to accomplish the task. At the present time of this writing it seems that I am still at a loss to figure out the best possible logistical solution. That, however, is not a problem. There is a solution. I can get from “here to there” with no problem. The issue is to minimize the time and the cost of going to less-than-optimal locations in the world to simply “rack up countries” to impress people. Would I go to these places to see the sights there? Probably not. There are simply too many places in the world that have sights that I want to see that I haven’t seen. Unfortunately, most people in America travel little. So, they are impressed with the number of countries a person has been to instead of trying to understand whether the traveler they are talking to has actually seen much of the world. In a way it’s really sad that I “rack up countries” to simply feed my own ego and impress people that I really do not care much about impressing. I often wish the world cared more about substance than about facades, but it doesn’t. It’s just fortunate that I don’t have to spend a lot of time or money to create the facade that the world seems to approve of. I can spend the vast majority of my time on this trip actually seeing sights that I consider incredibly interesting and spend the majority of my time in much more interesting places.

I think I’m going to assume that it will be better if I simply be patient and let the schedules for the airlines be a bit more secure before I book airfare between these locations. The key is to build enough days into the schedule to accommodate a high probability that any problems that might arise.

Maldives

Weather: Temperature averages for lows/highs is 81/89 with less than .3 inches of rain in March. Oklahoma City gets about 3 inches of rain in March.

Airfare: Think about $100 U.S. from KUL. Think about $105 from Male to Colombo on Mihin Lanka airlines.

Transfers: Take a ferry for $1-2 U.S.

Hostels: No hostels at Male.

Attractions: Not a lot I’d be interested in.

Yogyakarta – Borobudur

Weather: 76-87 degrees with about 8″ of rainfall in March. OKC gets 5″ in it’s wettest month of the year.

Airfare: Airfare coming in is $36 from Bali. Going out to KL it is $52.59 for virtually the whole month of March 2017 and, except for a sale, this is about the best fare that can be hoped for.

Transfers: See here.

Hostels: Hostelworld & Hostelbookers. Hostel prices and ratings looked great.

Attractions: Borobudur (imagesWikitravel, Wikipedia) is why I’m coming here. Google attractions search for Yogyakarta. TripAdvisor for Yogyakarta.  Prambanan (images, Wikitravel, Wikipedia) is a complex of ancient Hindu temples very close to where I’m staying that gets great press.
