View From Hostel Balconey – Cairo

This is the view from a hostel where I stayed in Cairo. The hostel (Lialy Hostel 8 Talaat Harb Square) was located in the heart of the downtown Talaat Harb district and was a mere 10 minute walk to the Egyptian Museum and the Nile River. The hostel cost about $5 per night and included a breakfast. What I got was a dorm bed in a dorm room with 5 other people. Don’t get me wrong, they were all nice people and I met several people at the hostel with whom I had some nice conversations over meals. I also ran into some people I had met at other places in Egypt and did some story swapping and reminiscing about our travel adventures.

Cairo Hostel Room

This is a Cairo Hostel Room. Nothing special. Just a room with 6/8 beds where a person can sleep for $5-6 a night. Reminds me of your basic 60′s crash pad. Comes with a nifty balconey over looking a trashy alley where you can pee when the bathrooms aren’t working.

Hostel Gang at Petra

The hostel gang at Petra. We were all sitting around a fire waiting for transportation connections which were very slow in coming. The reason we were sitting around the fire was that it was the only heat in the building. Heat isn’t usually an issue in Jordan. Transportation connections weren’t coming very quickyly because the roads were closed. The guy waving at me is Oliver, a Canadian I was traveling with who wasn’t worried about missing his flight like most of the rest of the people at the hostel, so he’s all smiles.

Europe 2005 Ljubljana Hostel

Hostel Celica is housed in what was once a prison in the city. Twenty of the cells have been transformed into comfortable rooms. The hostel is located right down the street from the bus and train station. Unfortuantely for me, they had no empty cells when I arrived. This is one of the most popular hostels in the world. Fotunately for me, Ljubljana has a couple of other hostels. 11/2005

Europe 2005 Cardiff Hostel

The hostel in the picture is the Cardiff Backpacker’s which is well known among the young as one of Europe’s best party hostels. This is probably because there are so many bars in Cardiff and because the bars are so full each night. The beds are also really cheap. I didn’t stay there when I first got to Cardiff, but I had to stay there at least one night to check it out. The breakfast was awful, but most of the people who stay there miss breakfast anyway. 10/2005
