Update on 20161002: I found that there are number of flights available 3 days out. It looks like I will not have to book these flights until Jan or Feb 2017. See the post under Australian Airfare for the best Australian booking sites.

It looks like flights from Melbourne to Hobart are the cheapest. A ferry from Melbourne to Devonport and back would be $142. I found Jetstar flights about 2 weeks out selling for $55 each way. It is definitely possible to sleep in Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport as of this writing. This is where Easyjet flies out of. Remember that it’s the domestic terminal and I suggest that this is the city to fly out of to get to Cairns. The fare for getting into Hobart from the airport is $32 AUD with the regular shuttle.  There is an alternative shuttle that can be as cheap as $11.50 AUD located here. You can catch the Tassielink local bus for $7.20 AUD each way that stops at a place called Midway which is within walking distance of the airport.. The schedule is here. Note that this bus does not run all that often.
