Thrifty Travel

While the title of this post may be Thrifty Travel, I’m not sure there is such a thing. Sure, I travel cheaply. Sometimes, I travel more cheaply than at other times. Right now. I’m traveling in my car and, even though my car gets 30-40 MPG on the highway, it still costs me about $20 a day for fuel because gas is up around $4 a gallon and I’m driving well over 100 miles a day and I’m spending a lot of time checking out the towns and cities as I go through them. My mileage start suffering when I cruise around town at 25-30 MPH. I guess it’s okay to part with $20 a day for fuel. My food cost has been running about $15 a day. Part of that is because I parted with a few extra dollars for some wine for a Couchsurfing host. However, I had no food costs where I was there and I ate great. Believe me, it was worth the cost. Of course I also took off with some food supplies when I left home. Plus, I hit Wal-Mart up for fruit and cheap energy bars every day or so. I’m not sure I’ve missed a day seeing a Wal-mart in this part of the country. This helps and keeps me eating a reasonably healthy diet.

While this is only my third day on the road, I feel good about it. I’m seeing things. I’m moving. I’m not having finding things to see. I’m enjoying the experience. I’m keeping my costs reasonable. I guess I’m doing what I set out to do – spend a little time looking at Oklahoma and some of the things available in the Sooner State.
