Carlsbad Caverns

carlsbad-trip-map-01

I’m finally going to Carlsbad Caverns. Soon, supposedly. The caverns are located about 20 miles southwest of Carlsbad, NM. The visitor’s center is open from 8 am – 5 pm. The last cavern entry for the dates I’ll be there is 2 pm. The entry fee for self-guided tours, which is good for 3 days, is $6 for adults, but I have an America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass. You can get a list of locations to get them here. There are also fees for the Ranger-Guided Tours. It looks like they currently range from $8-20 and take from 1-4 hours. You can get information and make reservations here. Note that there is no campground in the park. Overnight parking is not allowed. Commercial campgrounds are available at Whites City and in the city of Carlsbad. Also, there is no lodging available within Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the only camping that is allowed is done only by walking into the backcountry, at least a half-mile from roads and parking lots. Backcountry camping requires a free permit which is issued at the park Visitor Center. Note also that there are several free campgrounds located very close to the park. One list can be obtained here. Also, camping can be done within BLM areas. The BLM information for New Mexico is here, Wow! I’m getting all excited.
