Asia 2017 – Days per Country

This is my first attempt  at actually allocating days. Eventually, I have to develop some sort of schedule, otherwise I can’t book airfare in advance. Without advanced airfare bookings there is no telling how much airfare from one point to another will cost, assuming I can even get it. I must develop some rough form so that I can fill in the airfare.

New Zealand: 6 days.
Australia: 16 days.
Bali:  7 days to do Sulawesi, Moluka and Papua (Irian Jaya).
Yogyakarta: 4 days.
Kuala Lumpur: 3 days.
Sri Lanka: 6 days.
India: 6 days.
Bangladesh: 2 days.
Kolkata 1 day.
Bangkok 3 days.
Myanmar: 7 days.
Bangkok: 2 days.
Taiwan: 4 days.
Okinawa: 2 days.
South Korea: 6 days:
Jeju: 2 days.
Japan: 10 days.
Currently there are 78 days allocated.

4 THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE LOSING 140LBS

For Joe

I was shocked, awed, discombobulated and, of course, just a bit jealous (but only temporarily) when you said you were moving to Thailand in May. Thanks for thinking about me when you where wondering about cool places to go in Asia. My short answer for where to go is that all of the places to go and visit are cool. Never stop moving. Never stop smiling back at people who smile at you. Never stop starting up those conversations that can lead to who-knows-where. But, I don’t think I have to tell you that. You’re the epitome of friendly. But, where to go? What to do? That depends on what trips your trigger. What blows your dress up? I know why I go. I’m a tourist. I’m also an amateur cultural sociologist/anthropologist. But that doesn’t mean what I like will be what you like or vice versa. But I have seen some of Asia. Don’t just think Thailand. Think Asia. All of it. If you’re living there, it’s easy. Continue reading

Soup Saturday

Soup Saturday

Soup Saturday

It’s Soup Saturday. The beans, flax seeds, walnuts, and almonds are in the crock pot. Tomorrow, all those yummy veggies join them in the kettles. By the end of Valentine’s Day I should have about 18 containers ready for the freezer. Yum. Do I believe that a person can make better vegetable soup than they could ever get in the store? Absolutely. Why do I make it? Because my perception is that it’s better for me than Little Debbies, Cheetos, or Häagen-Dazs, all of which I prefer but don’t buy. As I’ve gotten older I’ve seen my lifestyle change. There hasn’t been a pound of beef or bacon in my refrigerator in years. My phone has a standing alert that goes off every Wednesday afternoon that simply says Sprouts. For those of you that don’t know, that’s an American grocery chain that’s noted for their excellent selection of vegetables at really good prices and Wednesday is Double Sale day. I may long for the world’s greasiest $1 double cheeseburger at Zesto’s but I sadly realize it’s a thing of the past. Oh well, at least I can say that I make the best vegetable soup I can can find anywhere this side a large corner soup stall I frequented while hanging out in Luang Prabang, a place that’s hard to get away from.

Avocados

AvocadosThree things challenge me when it comes to avocados: (1) Finding them for 29¢ at the store. I’m not tempted at 59¢ but I’m a consistent buyer at 29. (2) Peeling them at that perfect time when they are “just ripe” and the skin comes off easily but the inside is palatable but not too squishy. It’s a Baby Bear thing. (3) Getting just the perfect amount of salt on each piece I put in my mouth. When all three come together, life is sweet. I’m so thankful that little things like SuperFoods are important in my life. Now if I could just figure out who to cast my vote for as President. It seems when you peel back their exterior, the candidates seem either way too squishy or simply unpalatable. Sorta like a bad avocado – one that’s way-too-ripe or one that isn’t ready to serve.

Women’s Rights

Women's Rights

Women’s Rights

Women’s Rights is the newest Google Background. It’s the message of the day. It’s about Alice Paul who “was the architect of some of the most outstanding political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century.” I’m all for the politics of women’s rights. 100%. It only makes moral and ethical sense. Women deserve access to education, equal pay, voting, walking in front of me, a really big pickup truck, poopin’ in the woods and everything else, including those last bastions of male dominance, the infantry and the priesthood of the Catholic Church. And any other church for that matter, a thought that causes my feeble brain to immediately focus on the term “lightening bolt” though I’m not sure why. Go for it ladies. It’s yours for the taking and you can tick-off all those smug, self-righteous, macho *a%$!9#&^s in the process making it all the sweeter. Just remember, all that advancement comes with some responsibilities. Big ones. Like getting me a fresh beer out of the fridge on you way back from the kitchen. :-D
