Heading Uptown in ABQ

ABQ Uptown BusWhenever I’m in Albuquerque I like to ride the bus. The bus in ABQ is unique. When I ride buses in most of the places I visit I do it to take in the scenery, to look at buildings, neighborhoods, and the environment in general. I want to know about the city. But, in Albuquerque it’s a little different. I ride the buses for two reasons. First I want to to get to an outlying location so that I can ride my bicycle back rather than out and back. Balloon Fiesta 2013

Balloon Fiesta 2013I’m into unique experiences. You might even say that I’m more interested in accumulating experiences than I ever was in accumulating dollars. But I don’t consider myself some sort of experience junkie. I don’t have a desire to skydive, bungee jump, deep sea dive, visit the North Pole, find the headwaters of the Amazon, or wander around Borneo in search of shrunken heads. I just like to see new things. Continue reading

Tom’s Back Yard

Me and TomTom's BackyardOkay, I admit it. It’s not much of a yard in terms of grass. But, it’s a great place to hang out and that’s what Tom wanted to do – hang out with all of his friends. Tom’s gone. But, his legacy lives on in his backyard where we all like to gather. Sometimes, I just go out and sit and listen to the fountain. Sometimes I lay in the hammock. Other times I go out and rake leaves or sweep. It’s a good place to park my bicycle. There’s lots of vegetation to help me feel at ease. There’s a grill if I want to cook. There are lights if I want to go out at night. I can turn them off if I want to sit in the dark. Almost 50 years later, He’s still with me in spirit. Our friend John, who lives there now, left the house like he had it. It’s still one of the nicest backyards I know.

Rolling Again

Visitor Center Amarillo, TXIt’s a new day and I’m off. I’m taking off for Albuquerque to pick up John for our camping trip to Carlsbad Caverns. I take off early for OKC for a $22 oil change with Pep Boys. It’s the first time I can remember being in rush hour traffic in the morning for the last couple of years. That’s a good insight for me. It means I’m not a slave to a time clock. I fill up my 2001 Kia Rio and drive to Amarillo, TX where I fill up and find I got 36 MPG from OKC to Amarillo. That’s a good sign for my summer trip to the west coast of the U.S. I stop in Amarillo because I’ve never really visited the city before. This is a picture of my at the Visitor Center in downtown Amarillo. I got lucky and got to meet Jutta Matalka, the Director of Tourism & Amarillo Film Commissioner who gave me some insights into Amarillo. One thing she told that I found interesting is that the largest museum in Texas is located within 20 miles of Amarillo in Canyon, TX. Unfortunately, it was closed on Monday.
